Good news! Your home’s story has research potential.

Your home might be more modern, but it still has a story to tell

From what you’ve told us, your home sounds like a Post-Edwardian property, possibly built between the 1920s and 1970s, and part of a more recent chapter in Britain’s architectural and social history.

It may be a compact cottage, terraced house, or suburban semi - or one of the larger homes built in the interwar or postwar period, such as a grander terrace or detached house. Many of these homes were built in new estates or expanded neighbourhoods, often reflecting changing ideas of space, light, and family life.

Even though they’re newer, these houses can still have rich and meaningful histories. They were lived in through the Second World War, adapted to growing families, or owned for decades by the same people. Some hold traces of their builders or developers, or reflect wider patterns of migration, social mobility or local industry.

In terms of historical records, we may find occupants in census returns (up to 1921), electoral registers, directories, valuation maps, planning files, newspapers, and oral histories. The paper trail is often less detailed than for older properties, but there are still valuable threads to uncover.
