The Victorian Home Story

£1,500.00

A house history for small/medium-sized Victorian homes, drawn from the online record

The Victorian Home Story is ideal for small or medium-sized Victorian cottages, semi-detached and detached homes. These are often characterful homes on village lanes, in established suburbs, or in historic towns, cities and neighbourhoods.

Homes like these usually appear across a broad range of online records. Depending on the property and what has survived, we may draw on census returns, historic maps, street directories, electoral registers, newspaper archives, valuation surveys, tithe records, photographs and more.

The result is a personal, well-contextualised house history. It brings to light the people who lived there, how the house changed over time, and how the area around it developed.

Research for the Victorian Home Story comes from online sources only and does not include visits to physical archives. It is designed for smaller Victorian homes: cottages, semi-detached houses and more modest detached houses. If your home is older or larger, it can also be a way to begin with one chapter of its story, the Victorian years, told through the online record.

Estimated turnaround: 8-10 weeks, depending on our schedule at the time of booking. This will be confirmed during the booking process.

Investment: £1,500

Payment options: Pay in full or over two monthly instalments

Your House Story

Once your House Story has been commissioned, the work unfolds in stages: detailed historical research, the writing of your house history, and finally design and print preparation. You will have the opportunity to review the draft before it moves into design, so that the finished piece feels complete, personal and fully considered.

Your House Story is then delivered as a beautifully presented history of your home - carefully researched, thoughtfully written, and designed to be kept and enjoyed for years to come.

‘You uncovered so many little gems about our beautiful house that may otherwise have been lost or overlooked. The communication was fantastic throughout and the finished book was beautiful, so incredibly detailed.’

VICTORIA, MEAGRAM HOUSE - THE CLASSIC

‘It really resonated when I read about George Stratton, the longest resident at Stoneheal Cottage, and that he was a gardener, as I work in horticulture and actually own my own nursery. It makes me wonder if George Stratton is still here, keeping an eye on the place. Thank you for all the hard work that has gone into bringing the history of Stoneheal Cottage to us.’

FAQs

‘I have always loved this house - even before moving in I used to spot it as I drove past. Now knowing it was the village Surgery for many years (as a nurse) I feel I now understand that draw better. The rich and colourful lives of the people who lived here was incredible. Learning that the road and houses behind us had once been our orchard was a surprise. The wall print is now proudly hung in our hallway.’
